When Does My Pennsylvania Registration Expire?
Pennsylvania passenger vehicle registrations are issued on a two-year cycle based on the vehicle owner’s birth month. Your registration expires at the end of your birthday month every two years. Motorcycles renew annually in the owner’s birthday month. Trucks over 17,000 lbs and trailers renew annually on May 31.
PennDOT mails renewal notices approximately three months before your registration expires. You can renew online up to six months before your expiration date, meaning you can complete renewal early if your inspections are current.
After completing online renewal, you can immediately print a temporary registration credential to carry in your vehicle while permanent documents are mailed.

How Do I Renew My Pennsylvania Registration?

Visit PennDOT’s online services portal.
To renew online, PennDOT must have your current name and address on file, and your registration must expire within six months or already be expired.
You will need:
- 7-character plate number
- First 8 digits of your title number
- Insurance information
- Current odometer reading
Pay by credit card, debit card, or electronic check.
After completing online renewal, print your temporary registration credential immediately. It remains valid while your permanent registration documents are mailed.

Pennsylvania’s Plate Reissuance Program
PennDOT continues to replace older license plates that no longer meet reflectivity standards.
If your plate series has been designated for reissuance, you will receive a letter from PennDOT notifying you.
Watch for your new plates in the mail and install them immediately upon receipt.
Your current expiration date remains unchanged. The plate replacement does not reset your registration cycle.
Keep the PennDOT notification letter with your registration card until the new plate arrives. It serves as proof of valid registration during the transition period.
The current reissuance series includes J-series passenger plates announced in March 2024.
