Florida renewals are handled by your county tax collector, not the DMV. No emissions test required. Your deadline is the last day of your birthday month, and a $5 late fee kicks in the next day.
How to Renew Your Florida Plate Online
Online renewal is the fastest option for most Florida drivers. The system is available 24/7 and takes about three minutes if your insurance is current and there are no holds on your account. Your decal arrives by mail within 7-10 business days.
Go to MyDMV Portal or your county tax collector’s site
Visit services.flhsmv.gov or your specific county tax collector’s website. Many counties, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Orange, have their own renewal portals that are equally valid.
Enter your plate number or renewal notice PIN. You can use either your license plate number or the barcode PIN printed on your mailed renewal notice. The system will pull up your vehicle record automatically.
Verify your insurance is active
Florida tracks insurance through the Florida Insurance Verification System (FIVS). If your insurance is current, this step is automatic. If there is a lapse on record, you must resolve it before proceeding.
Pay and confirm
Pay by credit or debit card. Save your confirmation number. Your registration certificate and new decal will arrive by mail within 7-10 business days.
Florida allows online renewal up to 90 days before your expiration date. Renewing early does not shorten your next cycle; your new expiration will still fall on your birthday month the following year.
All Ways to Renew a Florida Plate
Online
services.flhsmv.gov or your county tax collector’s site. Fastest option. Decal mailed in 7–10 days.
By Mail
Return the renewal notice with a check or money order to your county tax collector. Allow at least 2 weeks before your deadline.
In Person
Visit your county tax collector’s office. Many counties also offer self-service kiosks at select locations; check your county’s website for locations.
Note: Florida plate renewals are processed by the county tax collector’s office, not FLHSMV service centers. If you go to a DMV office expecting to renew, they will redirect you.
When Is My Florida Plate Due? Deadlines & Late Fees
Florida vehicle registrations expire on the last day of your birthday month each year. There is no grace period. If your birthday is in July, your plate expires July 31, the $5 late fee applies starting August 1.
| BIRTHDAY MONTH | PLATE EXPIRES | LATE FEE STARTS |
|---|---|---|
| February | Feb 28/29 | March 1 |
| June | June 30 | July 1 |
| September | Sept 30 | October 1 |
| December | Dec 31 | January 1 |
Driving with an expired Florida registration is a non-criminal traffic infraction under Florida Statute § 320.02. Officers can and do stop vehicles for expired decals. Beyond the $5 late fee at renewal, a citation carries additional court costs and potential insurance surcharges.
How Much Does Florida Plate Renewal Cost?
Florida renewal fees are based on vehicle weight. There is no Vehicle License Fee or ad valorem property tax at renewal; what you see below is the state fee, before your county adds its service charge.
| VEHICLE WEIGHT | BASE STATE FEE | WITH MAX COUNTY FEE |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2,500 lbs | $27.60 | ~$33.85 |
| 2,500-3,499 lbs | $35.60 | ~$41.85 |
| 3,500 lbs and over | $45.60 | ~$51.85 |
| Late fee (any weight) | +$5.00 | Added after birthday month |
Specialty and personalized plate renewal fees are higher. The annual specialty plate fee (which funds the associated organization or program) is charged at every renewal in addition to the base registration fee.
Where Does the Florida Renewal Decal Go?
Florida uses a single decal that adheres to the upper-right corner of your rear license plate. The decal shows your new expiration month and year. Florida law requires the old decal to be completely removed before the new one is applied; stacking decals is not permitted and can result in a citation.
Correct Placement
Upper-right corner of the rear plate. Old decal fully removed. Decal flat against the plate surface with no bubbles or peeling edges.
Common Mistakes
Placing the new decal over the old one. Putting the decal on a front plate or window. Applying it to the wrong corner. Any of these can result in a traffic stop.
What Can Block Your Florida Renewal?
Florida’s system automatically checks for several conditions before allowing renewal. If any of the following are on your record, the system will stop your renewal until they are resolved.
Insurance lapse
Florida tracks coverage through the FIVS system. A gap of even one day can trigger a block. You must reinstate coverage and wait for the system to update. This can take 24-48 hours before renewal will clear.
Unpaid traffic citations or court fees
Outstanding fines from Florida courts are reported to FLHSMV and block renewal. Pay the fine and allow 2–3 business days for the hold to be lifted.
Child support holds
Florida participates in the state child support enforcement program. Unpaid support can result in a registration hold that must be resolved through the Department of Revenue Child Support Program.
Outstanding title or lien issues
Unresolved title disputes, unreleased liens, or fraudulent title flags will prevent renewal. These require in-person resolution at a tax collector’s office.
Florida Does Not Require an Emissions Test
Unlike Georgia, California, or Arizona, Florida has no statewide vehicle emissions testing requirement for registration renewal. This applies to all vehicle types and all 67 counties. You do not need to visit a testing station, and there is no smog certificate to submit before renewing.
This is one of the reasons Florida online renewal is so fast—the only conditions the system checks are insurance status, fines, and other administrative holds.
