How Long Is a Connecticut Temporary Plate Valid?
Connecticut dealer-issued temporary plates are valid for 60 days from the date of issue. This is one of the longer windows in the Northeast. On day 61, the plate has expired and driving on it is a citable offense under Connecticut General Statutes § 14-12.
Who Issues Connecticut Temporary Plates?
Licensed CT Dealers
Any licensed Connecticut dealer is authorized to issue one temporary plate per sale at the point of purchase. The plate is free; dealers may not charge a separate fee. Dealers are responsible for submitting your title application to the CT DMV within the required timeframe.
Connecticut DMV Offices
For private-party purchases and out-of-state transfers, CT DMV offices can issue temporary plates while your permanent registration is processed.
Handwritten or printed temporary plates from unofficial sources are not legal in Connecticut. Only dealer-issued or DMV-issued plates are valid.
Buying From a Private Seller in Connecticut
In Connecticut, plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle. When you buy from a private individual, the seller removes their plates. You must visit a CT DMV office to register the vehicle and obtain plates or a temporary permit before driving it.

Mount in the rear license plate bracket. All information is fully visible. Expiration date clearly legible. Secured so it does not flutter or fall.

Inside the rear window. Covered with a frame or tinted sleeve. Folded, torn, or altered. Expiration date obscured in any way.
Note: Connecticut winters can be harsh on paper tags. Road spray and moisture can make them illegible quickly. Ensuring they are tightly secured in the proper bracket is essential to prevent citations.
What If My Connecticut Temp Plate Expires?
Do not drive the vehicle. An expired temporary plate is treated as if there is no registration. If the delay is the dealer’s fault, such as the title not being submitted on time, contact the dealership in writing. New Connecticut Residents
If you move to Connecticut, your out-of-state registration remains valid while you establish residency. Connecticut requires you to register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing Connecticut residency. No temporary plate is issued, your out-of-state plates remain legal until you complete CT registration.
